People who spend prolonged periods of time studying, reading, or playing games on laptop computers resting on their upper legs could develop “toasted skin syndrome,” .

The “syndrome” consists of a brownish discoloration of the skin caused by prolonged exposure to heat from the computer.

Erythema ab igne (also known as hot water bottle rash, fire stains, laptop leg, and toasted skin syndrome) refers to skin that is reddened due to long-term exposure to infrared radiation.

Monitor patients with erythema ab igne (Toasted Skin Syndrome) at regular intervals for possible development of thermal keratosis, squamous cell carcinoma in situ, and squamous cell carcinoma.
